How To Care For Your Aluminium Louvres

Aluminium Louvres

Spring in Australia is the perfect time to get your house in order. It’s also a great time to start preparing your outdoor room with the installation of a retractable roof or a standard opening roof, summer is the time to sit back and enjoy the benefits your external blinds and sun louvres offer.

Once your outdoor room is ready to be sure to clean your louvres periodically to remove dirt, grime and accumulated salt. But how do you care for aluminium louvres?

Powder-Coating And Anodised Maintenance

Aluminium louvres can be powder coated in a colour of your choice or can have an anodised finish, which coats the aluminium with an electrochemical treatment.

Powder-coating is a colour treatment for aluminium, which also makes it strong, anti-corrosive, and coloured in any colour tone of choice. These treatments maintain your aluminium louvres, but it’s still advisable to keep them clean.

Motorised Louvres – Operate Them Regularly

Operable louvre systems should be operated at least monthly for optimum performance. Simply open and close them.

How To Clean Your Aluminium Louvres

Although your aluminium louvres have been powder-coated or anodised, they are subjected to the elements. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to clean your aluminium louvres.

Step 1:

Don’t allow grime, dust, dirt – or salt, if you live near the coast – to accumulate.Hose off regularly.

Step 2:

Clean the powder-coating with warm water, and using only a household detergent which is non-abrasive and pH neutral.  You should only use a soft cloth or brush, but nothing that could scratch or damage your louvres.

Step 3:

Clean your aluminium louvres every six months, or every one to three months if you live close to the coast or in an industrial area.

Step 4:

After you’ve cleaned your aluminium louvres, make sure that you rinse each panel thoroughly with fresh water. Tilt the louvres to 90 degrees to allow water to run off.

Warning

Do not use solvents on your powder coated or anodised Louvre system. These are harmful to the extended life of the surface and should not be used for cleaning purposes.
