Home Security Improvements To Keep Your Family Safer

Home Security Improvements To Keep Your Family Safer

Sometimes a long day at work is only made worse by returning home and realizing you’ve been robbed. Perhaps some of your most coveted possessions have been stolen, or worse, they’ve been destroyed, and the rest of the home has been vandalized in the process. Often times, there won’t be any trace of who has taken these possessions or caused the damage. While many families will never have to deal with these issues, these robberies are occurring at a more frequent rate than ever. Nearly 2.5 million robberies occur every year, which is close to 10,000 robberies per day.

While the numbers above are staggering, it’s important to note that nearly two-thirds of these burglaries are residential break-ins — so any house can become a target. The majority of burglaries happen between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. as attackers are targeting times in which homeowners are away. While no one wants to be the victim of such a crime, sometimes it may feel unavoidable, especially considering the average burglary only takes eight to ten minutes. Any break-in will cost you constant worry, in addition to mention money; the average burglary loss is $2,416. Statistics suggest that over the next 20 years, three in four homes are likely to be broken into, yet most homes lack any kind of security system.

No home is complete without adequate security measures to protect it from these types of attacks. For most homes, these measures come in the form of alarm systems. These systems are so influential on safety that nearly four out of five burglars scout homes prior to a break-in to ensure their targets are without them. As it stands, most burglars that do notice an alarm system would rather target a home without one. Failure to notice these systems prior to the attack will cause panic mid break-in, which is more than likely to cause attackers to exit the home faster.

Fortunately for homeowners, additional security measures do exist, and they are an effective way to further reduce their risk of burglary. One of the more common security measures include video doorbells. With just about one in every five homes having these installed, more and more burglars are being exposed prior to ever entering the home. Additionally, protection services offered by companies specializing in security services are a great method for protecting the home. As of now, about 17% of homeowners employ these companies to professionally monitor their homes for an additional safety measure. Families are just as capable of monitoring their own security systems, but often fail to place these cameras in such a way that their home remains secure from every angle.

The trick is installing these cameras in intricate places outside of the home. Most often these cameras are installed closest to the entryways of a home. Back doors, side doors, and a home’s front door will also include some coverage from these cameras. Additionally, some cameras covering the ground level windows of a home can be effective. A camera dedicated to the space surrounding a home’s garage is also very common. It’s important to remember that keeping these cameras in inconspicuous places are better suited for protecting your family from these burglaries.
